What makes laser hazards particularly insidious is that many wavelengths are invisible to the human eye and provide no natural warning before damage occurs. Infrared and ultraviolet laser radiation can cause severe injury without any sensation of pain or brightness. By the time symptoms appear, irreversible damage has often already occurred. This is why industrial laser settings must have protective eyewear for all their staff.

Precision-Engineered Protection
NoIR laser safety glasses are manufactured using specialized materials and coatings that can effectively block or attenuate specific laser wavelengths while maintaining excellent visible light transmission. Laser protection requires precision engineering with specific optical density values for specific wavelength ranges. Optical Density (OD) is a measure of the attenuation of energy passing through a filter. The higher the OD value, the higher the attenuation and the greater the protection level, However, the higher OD may also potentially lower visible light transmission (VLT), which can make it harder to see. It's crucial to choose eyewear with an OD that matches or exceeds the recommended level for the specific laser in use. 

Each NoIR laser safety lens is tested to verify that it provides the exact protection level required for specific laser types.

Visible Light Transmission and Lens Material
Visible Light Transmission, or VLT, is another important consideration factor for laser eyewear. Visible Light Transmittance is the percentage of the visible spectrum (380 to 720nm) transmitted through the lens, weighted against the sensitivity of the human eye. As a rule, the higher the VLT, the better. 65-35% VLT is generally high enough to be useful in all environments, where VLTs in the 20s and below should only be used in well-illuminated working environments.

Mineral glass filters can offer higher VLTs and higher damage thresholds, however they are heavier and more expensive, while the lightweight, more cost-effective polymer filters offer varying levels of VLT and mid-level damage thresholds for UV, Visible and near IR, with lower damage thresholds for IR.

Frame Designs for Comprehensive Protection
Laser radiation can reach the eye from multiple angles, which means that frame design is as important as lens technology. NoIR laser safety goggles feature wraparound designs to prevent radiation from reaching the eye from peripheral angles. The close-fitting frames minimize gaps. These designs are particularly helpful in environments where reflected or scattered laser radiation may approach from unpredictable angles.

Fitover frames are designed to fit snugly over the prescription glasses. They run a bit larger and wider than wrap-around glasses, and some models include side shields for wide field of view.
