Lasers in dentistry offer a minimally invasive and precise approach to various procedures, including soft tissue treatments like gum reshaping and frenectomies, as well as hard tissue procedures like cavity removal and teeth whitening. They can reduce pain, bleeding, and swelling, potentially leading to faster healing and reduced reliance on anesthesia. NoIR offers high quality, comfortable protective eyewear for dentists and their patients during various laser procedures.

Laser and Curing Light Risks for Dental Professionals

Dental professionals face daily risks to their eyes not only from debris and chemicals but also from lasers and curing light. Different wavelengths of laser light affect different parts of the eye, with near-infrared lasers (e.g. diode lasers) being particularly dangerous to the retina. Lasers can also cause damage to the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. Even if the direct beam isn't aimed at the eye directly, laser light can be reflected off surfaces, posing a risk to the doctor, assisting staff and the patient.

Dental curing lights emit a concentrated beam of blue light, which is known to be particularly harmful to the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). Prolonged exposure, particularly without proper protective eyewear, can lead to retinal damage, including potential for age-related macular degeneration. Eye strain, headaches, and color distortion are also potential short-term effects.

Specially designed laser safety glasses are crucial for blocking the specific wavelengths of light emitted by the dental laser.
